Country supergroup the Highwomen will release their self-titled debut on September 6th. With or without context, The Highwomen is a country album for the ages, filled with joy, laughter, tears, pain, and shit-kicking honky-tonk soul. Still, context does matter. Women are vastly underrepresented when it comes to country radio, and this is a project meant to tackle that disparity head on. Whether it succeeds in the former is yet to be determined, but the latter is easy: Carlile, Hemby, Morris, and Shires, alongside a score of others including Yola, Sheryl Crow, Jason Isbell, Tim and Phil Hanseroth, Miranda Lambert, and Lori McKenna, do what country does best, which is telling the truth about the human experience. Highwomen Jimmy Webb, Amanda Shires, Brandi Carlile With the blessing of Jimmy Webb, who wrote the original Highwayman anthem , Shires and Carlile created not only the tale of the band in classic response-song style, but also the story of how women, throughout history, have often sacrificed everything for a good greater than themselves. In , when Shires was finishing her record, My Piece of Land , in music producer Dave Cobb 's studio, Shires had an idea to create a female country supergroup in homage to the legendary Highwaymen country supergroup consisting of Johnny Cash , Waylon Jennings , Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. At the same time, the lack of representation of women artists on country music radio and at country music festivals had been publicly discussed by many, influenced by the Me Too movement and journalists like Marissa Moss. While on tour in her van, while listening to country radio, Shires kept a running list of artists and noticed that there were few women. When she called to request they play more women artists, she was directed to a Facebook page lottery system. Cobb recommended Shires call Carlile, whom she didn't know. Carlile thought it would be fun, and would be an interesting creative project. A standing ovation was inevitable: The audience had been on its feet before the quartet stepped onstage. The Highwomen — Carlile, Shires, Natalie Hemby and Maren Morris — proudly call themselves a movement as much as a band, one whose mission is clear: solidarity, specifically with other women in country music. Their self-titled debut album is out Friday. The genre has a stark gender imbalance. Shires found not only that most songs played were by men, but when she called to make requests, she was directed to station Facebook pages where songs by female artists were pitted against each other in polls. Only one could win. It can be kind of a lonely thing out there by yourself. She approached Carlile first, boldly asking her to start a band called the Highwomen the first time they met.
