Apart from David's unusual blend of influences, there are other important factors which affected the birth of this unusual track, not least of which is the somewhat reversed order in which the various elements of the record were assembled. Even more unusually, it appears that the instrumental backing for 'Genie In A Bottle' was almost complete before the song itself had even been written. One of the most immediately conspicuous elements of the arrangement is the rapid bass drum pattern which continues throughout most of the song. We did it on the Sweat album, in the song of the same name. Using this initial idea, David started by programming the various drum parts.
