Memorable for chunky cardigans, flares and full-throttle car chases using a striped Ford Gran Torino, it brought a shaft of Californian sunshine to down-at-heel, strike-bound Britain, making homegrown police dramas look dull. Nearly every schoolboy had a red-and-white toy car, and almost every schoolgirl had a crush on Soul or his screen partner, Paul Michael Glaser. Does he miss it? Richard Solberg—professor of History and Political Science as well as an ordained minister—moved his family to Berlin where he served as Religious Affairs Advisor to the U. High Commission and, from , as Senior Representative for the Lutheran World Federation, a refugee relief organization. As advisor to the U. Commission in Berlin, Dr. Because the Church was so central to the life of the German people, the Soviets, for fear of a severe backlash, could not afford to close them down. Solberg used his special credentials as a churchman to gain entry into East Germany and travelled freely. In , Dr. Solberg was appointed Senior Representative for the Lutheran World Federation, a position in which his primary function was to oversee refugee relief operations in West Berlin, as well as to facilitate the reuniting and relocation of families that had been split apart by the iron hand of Communist-controlled Eastern Europe and that had risked their lives to flee into West Berlin. In , he became involved with the South Dakota Young Democrats in the ultimately successful campaign to elect John Kennedy as President. David was also an avid sportsman and baseball was his first love.
He became a British citizen in Soul was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 28, , and is of Norwegian extraction. His mother, June Johnanne Nelson , was a teacher, and his father, Dr. Richard W. Because of this, the family moved frequently during Soul's youth. After graduation from Washington High School Sioux Falls, South Dakota , Soul attended Augustana College where his father taught political science and history but after two years, withdrew to move to Mexico with his family where he studied for one year at the University of the Americas in Mexico City. Soul first gained attention as the "Covered Man" appearing on The Merv Griffin Show in and , on which he sang while wearing a mask. He explained: "My name is David Soul, and I want to be known for my music. In , he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and following a number of guest appearances, including the episode "The Apple" from the second season of Star Trek , he landed the role of Joshua Bolt on the television program Here Come the Brides with co-stars Robert Brown , Bobby Sherman and Bridget Hanley.
